The Army's Operation Deep Freeze I was officially announced to the public on February 17, 1956, by Secretary of the Army Wilber M. Brucker. However, the Army's plans were changed after Congress appropriated $45,000 for a feasibility study, and the project was transferred to the Naval Research Laboratory. The project was later renamed Operation Deep Freeze. While the Army had intended to use a design from the Air Force's Operation Frigid, the Navy preferred the design that it had developed, which was developed in conjunction with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). NACA had developed the composite ice-filled dome for deep-freeze stations as part of Project Chariot. One of the differences between Operation Deep Freeze and Project Chariot is that Project Chariot was funded by the U.S. Air Force, but was operated by the U.S. Army.
Empirical evidence on the unemployment rate also suggests that claims of being laid-off have been fabricated by workers to qualify for benefits. Of all laid-off workers, only half (51%) reported that they had been fired or laid-off. Just under one-quarter (23.7%) reported leaving their jobs voluntarily, and one-in-ten (10.1%) reported being dismissed or having their position terminated by the company. Approximately 1.8% were left involuntarily, and 1.5% reported being told to leave.
In 2005, Faronics introduced its Enterprise version of Deep Freeze. Like the standard version, it can be used to block unwanted executables, however, it can also be used to block unwanted applications (including the user's browser(s)) and other files, preventing their execution and usage until they are manually removed from the whitelist. Additionally, the Enterprise version can be managed remotely via Faronics Core.
Faronics has launched a Linux version of Deep Freeze with new features that include a web-based GUI, the option to use a Linux partition instead of a FAT32 partition as the target partition, and the support for more than 100 whitelist entries, the ability to group whitelist entries into a folder, and the ability to create sub-folders for groups of whitelist entries.
