Movies are about imagination, and this one is no exception. The comparison scene I always remember is the one where a young Moses is having a bad dream and imagining God and the other gods fighting with each other. These are his imaginings. Yet his dreams are more vivid, more believable, more personal than anything his people actually witnessed. He sees a snake that threatens him, and his father is there to warn him, not the snake-handler. In his dream, he sees a glimmer of light with a face, and he is too afraid to look, but it is his great-grandmother who tells him God is inside him and he will rule the world. Moses is torn between his father and great-grandmother. I do not remember any other movie from back then that was such a tangle of contradictory impulses.
Egypt is seen here through the eyes of a shepherd. Moses is a young man who has been raised in a simple, rural way in the neighborhood of Egypt. He begins as a shepherd boy, falls in love with a princess, and is inspired by God to help his people. The whole story is told in flashback. It is the story of how Moses, the shepherd boy, became a prince. He is very much alive to the needs of others, and his dream to be a leader for his people inspires him to fulfill his destiny.
